    Questions & Answers

Everything people ask before they start

Logic is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and Kids martial arts academy at 1360 N American St, Philadelphia, PA 19122, rated 4.9★ on 186+ Google reviews. Adults start with 2 free weeks and a gear kit they keep. Beginners train in beginners-only classes with no live sparring. Free parking on site.

    Getting Started

What happens if you decide to walk in this week.

I've never done jiu jitsu. Can I actually start here?

Yes — that's who this academy is built for. Logic runs Philadelphia's only beginner-exclusive White Belt classes: no advanced students in the room, no live sparring, a set curriculum taught in order. You do not need to get in shape first, and you do not need to know anything before your first class.

    How do I start?

Pick your program page and start online — /beginners-jiu-jitsu for adult jiu jitsu, /womens-jiu-jitsu, /muay-thai, or /kids-jiu-jitsu for ages 4 to 13. You can be on the mat this week. If you'd rather see the room first, book a 15-minute tour and we'll walk you through it in person.

What do I bring to my first class?

Athletic clothes, a water bottle, and clipped fingernails and toenails. Nothing else. Arrive 15 minutes early so we can show you where the changing rooms are and introduce you to the coach before class starts.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. Getting fit is a side effect of training, not a prerequisite for it. Beginner classes are taught at a pace built for people whose last workout was a while ago, and you can sit out any round to breathe without anyone thinking twice about it.

Am I too old to start?

No. Our adult beginner classes routinely include people in their 30s, 40s and 50s starting from zero. Because the beginner track has no live sparring, you're not being thrown in against a 22-year-old competitor in week one.

    Pricing & Terms

The actual numbers, with the terms attached.

What does adult jiu jitsu cost?

Your first 2 weeks are free. The only thing you buy on day one is your gear — $180 for the full kit (gi, belt, rashguard), yours to keep no matter what happens. After the free period, membership is $49/wk, billed every 4 weeks ($196).

    What does Muay Thai cost?

Same structure: your first 2 weeks are free, and you buy a $99 gear kit (gloves and hand wraps) that's yours to keep. After that it's $49/wk, billed every 4 weeks.

What does the kids program cost?

The kids program starts with a paid intro program rather than a membership, so you can see how your child responds before committing to anything longer. Current pricing and start dates are on /kids-jiu-jitsu.

    Is there a contract?

Adult memberships are 12-month agreements at $49/wk. You can cancel free within your first 14 days with one tap in the Wodify app and keep your gear. After 14 days, cancellation requires 60 days' notice. Every term is on the agreement before you sign anything.

How do I cancel during the free 2 weeks?

One tap in the Wodify app — our members app, which you get the day you join. No phone call, no email chain, no conversation at the front desk. Your gear stays yours.

Do you offer a free trial class?

We do something better: your first 2 weeks of full membership are free. One class shows you a room. Two weeks shows you whether you'll actually keep coming back — which is the only question that matters.

Is there a discount for family members?

Yes — families training together is the norm here, not the exception. Ask at the front desk or on your tour and we'll put the numbers in front of you for your specific combination of adults and kids.

    Classes & Schedule

What's on the mat and when.

Which class should I start in?

If you're brand new to jiu jitsu, start in White Belt — it's beginners only. If you've trained before, start in All-Levels or Advanced. For striking, start in beginner Muay Thai. The full weekly grid is at /jiu-jitsu-schedule.

    When do beginner classes run?

White Belt Only jiu jitsu runs Monday and Wednesday 6–7pm, Thursday 6–7pm (no-gi) and Saturday 10–11am. Beginner-only Muay Thai runs Tuesday 6–7pm, Wednesday 6–7pm and Saturday 10–11am. The full weekly grid is on /jiu-jitsu-schedule.

    How long is a class?

50 minutes: warm-up, technique taught in pieces, then guided repetition of that technique. Beginner classes end there — no live rounds.

    How often should I train?

Two to three times a week is the sweet spot for a new student. It's enough repetition that the last class hasn't faded before the next one, and few enough that your body keeps up.

    Do you have morning classes?

Yes. Muay Thai runs Tuesday and Thursday at 6–7am, and there is an all-levels jiu jitsu class Wednesday at 11am. Beginner-only classes are all evening or Saturday morning — see /jiu-jitsu-schedule.

    Do I have to spar?

Not in the beginner track — there's no live sparring in White Belt classes at all. Sparring is something you opt into later, in all-levels and advanced classes, when you've got the fundamentals to do it safely.

    Kids Program

Ages 4–13, five days a week.

What age can my child start?

Ages 4–13. Classes are grouped so a 5-year-old isn't training the same session as a 12-year-old, and the youngest group is built around attention span as much as technique.

Is jiu jitsu safe for kids?

It's a contact activity, so it isn't risk-free — but there's no striking, no head contact and no live sparring for beginners. Coaches control the pace of every drill, and every instructor at Logic is SafeSport certified, background checked, and works alongside CPR-certified staff.

Are your kids coaches certified and background checked?

Yes — every instructor on staff. Logic is an IBJJF Registered Academy, and all instructors are SafeSport certified and background checked. Several of the kids coaches, including Matt Rong and Dennis Pressey Jr., are parents themselves.

My child is shy. Will they be okay?

Shy kids are our most common starting profile. Coaches pair them deliberately, keep early drills partner-based rather than performance-based, and let them succeed at small things first. Confidence here is built by getting good at something, not by being told to be confident.

How often does the kids program run?

Five days a week, so you can fit training around school, sports seasons and your own schedule instead of the other way around. Times are on /kids-jiu-jitsu.

    Instructors & Lineage

    Who's actually teaching you.

    Who owns and runs Logic?

Dennis A. Pressey Jr. — Head Instructor and Owner. He's a black belt promoted in 2019 by Kristian Woodmansee and JT Torres, a 2x IBJJF No-Gi Pan American medalist and UFC Fight Pass veteran, with 18 years training and 12 years teaching. Full bio at /dennis-pressey-jr.

    What's Logic's lineage and affiliation?

Logic was founded by IBJJF World Champion Kristian Woodmansee, a black belt under Andre Galvao, which places the academy in the ATOS lineage back to Carlos Gracie Jr. Dennis took over at the end of 2025. Logic's current affiliation is Vanguard, joined in 2026, led by Josh Hinger and Kristian Woodmansee. Full timeline at /our-history.

    Are the instructors certified?

Yes. Logic is an IBJJF Registered Academy. Every instructor is SafeSport certified and background checked, and there are CPR-certified instructors on staff.

    Are there female instructors?

Yes. Gina Mancuso, a 2x IBJJF World Champion black belt, teaches White Belt and All-Levels classes — see /gina-mancuso. Purple Belt Shavana Jones coaches on the Kids program.

    Who teaches Muay Thai?

Edwin Capetillo leads the Muay Thai program — 10 years in the sport, a Karate Hall of Fame induction, and a national karate championship — alongside Adolphus Li and Fedir Lantukh. See /edwin-capetillo.

    Visiting & Parking

    Getting here without stress.

    Where are you located?

1360 N American St, Philadelphia, PA 19122 — South Kensington, on the Fishtown / Northern Liberties border.

    Is there parking?

Yes — a free private lot on site. You are not circling South Kensington looking for a spot before class, which is the single most common reason people quit a gym in this part of the city.

Can I get there by transit or bike?

Yes. The Market-Frankford El stops at Front & Berks and Front & Girard, both roughly four blocks away. There's an Indego bike station three blocks north on N American St.

    Are there showers and lockers?

Yes — lockers and showers on site, plus 2,000 square feet of matted training space. You can train before work and go straight to the office.

Can I watch a class before joining?

Yes. Book a 15-minute tour: watch a class, meet the coaches, ask anything, then decide. Or call (267) 936-2678 and we'll tell you which class is best to come see.

    Question not answered here?

Call us and a human picks up. Or come see a class — no obligation, no sales pitch at the door.
