    The short answer

Logic Jiu Jitsu runs Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes in Philadelphia at 1360 N American St in Fishtown. Beginner classes are white-belt-only — no experienced students in the room — run 50 minutes, and are taught by black belts. Your first 2 weeks are free; the only thing you buy is a $180 gear kit that is yours to keep.

    What you actually get

    • A white-belt-only beginner class. No experienced students, no getting used as a practice dummy on day one.
    • 50-minute classes: warm-up and movement, black belt technique instruction, partner drilling, then optional light positional sparring.
    • A structured curriculum, not random techniques. You learn positions in the order they actually build on each other.
    • Your own gear kit — gi, belt, and rashguard — sized to you and yours to keep whether you stay or not.
    • Free private parking on site. No meters, no permit hunting, no circling the block.
    • Coaching from black belts promoted inside a verified lineage, not from senior students filling in.

What actually happens in a beginner class

Fifty minutes, the same shape every time, so you always know what you walked into. The first ten minutes are movement — how to fall safely, how to get up off the ground, how to build a base so you are not simply flattened. Then a black belt teaches one technique and breaks it into parts. You drill it with a partner at a slow, cooperative pace. The last ten minutes are optional positional rounds: one position, one goal, light intensity. You can sit those out for weeks and nobody will comment on it. No warm-up designed to punish you. No sparring on day one. No surprise.

Why white-belt-only matters more than anything else on this page

Most academies put a first-timer in the same room as a four-year blue belt and call it a beginner class. That is the single biggest reason adults quit jiu jitsu inside a month — not the difficulty, not the soreness, but the experience of being completely overwhelmed by someone who has no reason to go easy. Our beginner classes are white belts only. Everyone in the room started recently. Everyone is bad at the same things. That changes the first month from something you survive into something you look forward to, and it is the reason our beginners still train at six months.

    How often to come, honestly

Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot. One class a week maintains but progresses slowly. Four or more is unnecessary in your first six months — recovery is part of the training, and the people who go hardest in week one are usually the people who disappear in week five. We would rather you come twice a week for a year than five times a week for a month.

Who these classes are not for

If you already train and want hard rounds immediately, the beginner class will bore you — go to our advanced program instead. If you want a striking workout, this is grappling; look at Muay Thai. If you want a belt fast, we follow IBJJF timelines and you will be disappointed. We would rather tell you now than take your money and have you leave in six weeks.

    Questions people actually ask

None. Beginner classes are white-belt-only and start from how to fall and how to base. Experience is not an advantage in your first six weeks — showing up is.

No, and waiting until you are in shape is the most common reason adults never start. The class is built so a deconditioned 40-year-old can keep up on day one. Jiu jitsu gets you in shape; it does not require it first.

At Logic your first 2 weeks are free. The only thing you buy is a one-time $180 gear kit — gi, belt, rashguard — which is yours to keep. After the free period, membership is $49/wk billed every 4 weeks ($196). No belt testing fees, no mat fees, no sign-up fee.

Fifty minutes. Long enough to learn something and drill it properly, short enough to fit around a job.

No. The last ten minutes are optional light positional rounds. Most beginners drill only for their first two or three weeks, then ease into rolling when they want to.

Gi. It forces you to learn grips, frames, and patience — the actual fundamentals. No-gi is faster and easier to enjoy early but harder to learn deeply. Start in the gi and add no-gi later.

Athletic clothes with no zippers or pockets, a water bottle, and sandals for walking off the mat. Your gi, belt, and rashguard are handed to you before your first free week begins.
