    The short answer

Thai boxing and Muay Thai are the same sport — Muay Thai is the Thai name for it. Logic runs Muay Thai classes in Philadelphia at 1360 N American St in Fishtown, led by Edwin Capetillo. Beginner classes require no experience and no sparring. Your first 2 weeks are free; the only thing you buy is a $99 gear kit (gloves and hand wraps) that is yours to keep.

    What you actually get

    • Beginner classes with no sparring requirement. You learn to hit pads and bags long before anyone hits back.
    • Real Muay Thai technique — hands, elbows, knees, kicks, and clinch — not a cardio class wearing Muay Thai's name.
    • Coaching led by Edwin Capetillo, supported by a coaching staff with a decade of experience on the floor.
    • Your own gloves and hand wraps, sized to you and yours to keep whether you stay or not.
    • Conditioning that happens as a side effect of learning the sport, not as a substitute for it.
    • Free private parking on site at 1360 N American St.

Thai boxing and Muay Thai are the same thing

If you searched for thai boxing classes, you are looking for Muay Thai. Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport and the name used inside the sport worldwide; thai boxing is the English description that stuck. It is often called the art of eight limbs, because unlike boxing or kickboxing you strike with eight points of contact: two fists, two elbows, two knees, two shins. That is what makes it the most complete stand-up striking system in combat sports, and it is what we teach.

What a beginner class looks like

You wrap your hands, then warm up with movement and footwork. A coach teaches one or two techniques — usually starting with stance, guard, and the jab-cross before anything else — and you drill them on pads and bags with a partner. Nobody is hitting you. Sparring in Muay Thai is earned, controlled, and optional, and it is not part of a beginner's first weeks. The people who get hurt in striking gyms are the ones thrown into sparring early. We do not do that.

Thai boxing vs boxing vs kickboxing

Boxing is hands only — the sharpest hand technique and head movement of the three, and the narrowest toolkit. Kickboxing adds kicks but generally excludes elbows and clinch work. Muay Thai includes hands, elbows, knees, kicks, and the clinch, which is the standing grappling exchange that decides most Muay Thai fights. It is the broadest of the three and the most useful base if you may later want to cross into MMA.

    Who these classes are for

Adults who want to learn to actually strike, get in serious condition doing it, and have no interest in being thrown to the wolves in week one. We take beginners seriously and we also take experienced strikers seriously — there are people in the room preparing to compete. Both belong. What we do not run is a fitness kickboxing class with no technical content.

    Questions people actually ask

Yes. Muay Thai is the Thai name for the sport; thai boxing is the English description. They refer to the same thing, and our Muay Thai classes are what you are looking for.

No. Beginner instruction starts from stance and guard. Most people in their first class have never thrown a punch with proper mechanics before.

Not as a beginner, and never as a requirement. Sparring is controlled, earned, and optional. Your first weeks are pads, bags, and drilling.

At Logic your first 2 weeks are free. The only thing you buy is a one-time $99 gear kit — gloves and hand wraps, yours to keep. After that, membership is $49/wk billed every 4 weeks ($196).

Just the $99 kit you buy on day one — gloves and hand wraps, sized to you. Show up in athletic clothes with a water bottle and we handle the rest.

It is one of the most demanding conditioning workouts in combat sports, and the conditioning arrives as a by-product of learning the sport. Students who train two to three times a week see real changes — but we teach it as a martial art first.

Women train in the regular Muay Thai classes. Our dedicated women's program is in jiu jitsu — see /womens-jiu-jitsu.
