Your First Muay Thai Class — What Actually Happens (Philadelphia)

Your First Muay Thai Class — What Actually Happens (Philadelphia)

    In short

A beginner Muay Thai class at Logic runs 50 minutes: light warm-up, hand wraps, stance and footwork, then one or two strikes taught rep by rep on pads, partners, and the bag. There is no sparring, no contact to the head, and no fitness test. You show up in athletic clothes with a water bottle. Beginner-only classes run Tuesday 6:00 PM, Wednesday 6:00 PM, and Saturday 10:00 AM.

Almost nobody's first Muay Thai class is what they pictured.

People picture a room of fighters and a coach yelling. What actually happens is closer to a driving lesson: someone shows you where to put your feet, and you repeat it until it stops feeling stupid.

    Minute by Minute

    • 0–5Check in and wrap. A coach shows you how to wrap your hands — the single most useful thing you learn on day one. It protects your knuckles and stabilizes your wrist.
    • 5–12Warm-up. Skipping, shadow movement, hips and shoulders. Scaled — you go at your pace, not the room's.
    • 12–20Stance and footwork. Where your weight sits, how you step without crossing your feet, how you keep your hands up when you're tired. Everything else is built on this.
    • 20–35Technique of the day. One or two strikes — usually the jab, the teep, or a round kick — broken down and drilled on pads with a partner. The coach corrects you by name.
    • 35–45Bag rounds. Where the conditioning happens. You control the output. Nobody is hitting you.
    • 45–50Cool down. Stretch, questions, done. You'll be sweating and you'll be fine.

What You Will Not Be Asked to Do

    • Spar. Beginner classes never spar. Sparring is opt-in and reserved for experienced students.
    • Take a shot to the head. Not in your first class, not in your first month.
    • Keep up with anyone. There is no fitness bar to clear before you're allowed in.
    • Buy a pile of gear. Gloves and wraps are yours; shin guards, Thai pads, and bags are the gym's.

The Part Nobody Warns You About

Your shins will be tender the first two weeks. So will your obliques and the backs of your shoulders — muscles you don't use sitting at a desk. It fades. Train twice in week one rather than three times, and the second week feels dramatically better.

The other honest note: you will feel uncoordinated. Everyone does. Striking is a coordination sport before it is a fitness sport, and coordination arrives on its own schedule — usually somewhere around class five or six, when a combination comes out without you thinking about it.

    Who's Teaching

Muay Thai at Logic is led by Edwin Capetillo — 10 years in the sport and a Karate Hall of Fame inductee — with a coaching staff you can read about on the Muay Thai instructors page. All instructors are SafeSport certified, CPR certified, and background checked.

    Before You Come

    1. Arrive 10 minutes early. Waiver, parking, and a minute to meet the coach before the room fills.
    2. Eat light, two hours out. Kicking on a full stomach is its own lesson.
    3. Bring water. You'll drink more than you expect.
