Logic is the closest real BJJ academy to Northern Liberties — 1360 N American St, four minutes straight up American Street from the Piazza. If you're tired of the same Crossfit hour or the same Peloton ride, this is the change you've been circling for a year. The difference here is the beginner track: white belts train with white belts, taught in order, instead of being dropped into a mixed room to figure it out.

Why people from Northern Liberties train here.

    01

    Practically your block.

Four minutes from the Piazza, five from Schmidt's Commons. Twenty minutes on foot if the weather's good. You can train and still make a 7:30 dinner reservation.

    02

    More skill, less ego.

We don't run a 'survive your first class' culture. You're taught technique, you drill it, and you leave knowing more than when you walked in. Beginner classes don't spar.

    03

A schedule that fits real life.

Morning Muay Thai at 6am, a midday Jiu Jitsu class Wednesday at 11, evening classes at 6 and 7, and Saturday morning. Built around jobs, not around students with free afternoons.

    Getting here from Northern Liberties.

We're at 1360 N American St in Fishtown — 4 minutes from Northern Liberties. Three ways to get here, all of them simple.

    By car — 4 minutes

North on 2nd or Front, then west to American Street. Our private lot is on site and always free — which matters in a neighborhood where street parking is a sport of its own.

    By El — 4 blocks

Girard Station at Front & Girard is a short ride or walk from NoLibs, and the academy is about four blocks from that stop. Berks Station works too.

    On foot or bike

About a 20-minute walk from the Piazza. There's also a bike rental station three blocks north of us on N American St, so you can ride over without owning a bike.

What Northern Liberties people ask before they walk in.

Can I walk from Northern Liberties?

Yes — it's roughly a 20-minute walk from the Piazza, and plenty of our students do it in warmer months. Most drive because the lot is free and it's a four-minute trip. Bike racks are available inside.

What the room is actually like.

Adults who take the training seriously and don't take themselves seriously. No tough guys, no drama, no one testing the new person. 2,000 square feet of mat, lockers, and showers so you can train and go straight out afterward.

I haven't worked out in years.

That's the majority of people starting the beginner track. Week one you'll be sore in your hips and grip. By week three you'll notice your conditioning changed. Jiu jitsu is one of the few things where being out of shape at the start is completely normal and nobody comments on it.

    Who's teaching.

Head instructor Dennis Pressey Jr. — black belt, 18 years training, 12 years teaching, two-time No-Gi Pan Am medalist. Beginner classes are also led by black belts Markee, Matt, and Gina, a three-time IBJJF world champion. All instructors are SafeSport certified, background checked, and CPR certified.
